Set Your Weight Loss Goal:

What is your purpose behind losing weight?

If you are really serious, take out a sheet of paper and write down your goal or goals for your weight-loss program.

If you don't have a purpose then it's very difficult to sustain any program, project or mission. It's the same with your weight-loss program.

Decide "YOUR PURPOSE" behind losing weight.

The Purpose could be anything -

• To be healthy
• To look good
• To stay fit
• To get into that beautiful dress you saw at the designer store
• To run the Boston Marathon
• To play Baseball with your kid
• To climb the stairs without getting out of breath!
• To just start enjoying your favorite passion once again - it could be just dancing.

Well the list is endless. Only you know the reason, why, you want to lose weight. So, please take time, reflect on this and then write down your purpose for losing weight.

Now that you know your purpose let's get to brass tacks. Note the following:

What is your present weight?
How much weight do you want to lose? And more importantly how many pounds/month do you want to lose?
Is it realistic?
(Losing more than a kilo and half/month is not healthy)

Okay you are ready to set your goal. Now.
Take out a calculator and your measuring scales.

1. Write down your present weight - For example: 70 kilos
2. Write down your target weight - For example: 55 kilos (consult a height to weight chart and set a realistic target).
3. When do you want to reach your target - in a about a year.
4. Write down the target date by which you would have achieved your target weight.
5. Divide the weight you have to lose by the number of days in a year.

That is 15 kilos by 365 days. That is 1.23 kilos/month, that's just 41 grams a day.

Now, you have broken your weight loss goal into a bite site pieces. Now go for it!
Well, Not yet. Hold on for just a few minutes.

Hang your weight loss goal where you can see it every day.

A simple weight loss goal statement could be

"I would like to lose 15 kilos of weight by 2nd July 2004, because I want to look good, feel happy and healthy and play baseball with my 4 year old daughter.

I propose to achieve this goal of mine by losing 1.23 kgs/month or 41 grams/day.

My goal is by the end of two months I should be exercising one hour/day starting with 5 minutes/day and increasing it by 5 minutes every subsequent week"

But before you actually start, consult your doctor.

Find out whether you are fit to do the exercises you plan to do to lose your weight. If your doctor feels your weight loss plan is not realistic modify it according to your health situation. Once you are certified healthy enough you can always choose a more vigorous regime. But be patient till then.

For some of you exercise may not be an option due to various reasons - bad health could be a reason, you could devise a reasonable diet regime with the help of a dietician or nutrition expert - something that is suitable to you. If you are a busy person and do not have the time, patience or motivation to prepare your own diet meals then you could trust professionals like Zone Diet who deliver meal directly to your home every week. If you are consuming 1000 Kilo calories extra/day according to your dietician and the prospect of cutting out so much from your diet is daunting to you, start by reducing a 100 calories a day and gradually move up to the required levels. Who is going to play baseball with your kid and feel the thrill of it "YOU"

So go ahead make that plan today and stick to it!
